IN STITCHES
In January I wrapped a short film called In Stitches, which I co-wrote and co-directed with Katie Mae Ryan, a CMU dramaturg also in the class of 2023. We have been working on the script for the past two years and the project is now in the final stages of post production. I am incredibly excited to say it should be finished and festival ready by the summer. The film follows Sam, a standup comic stuck in a time loop as she tries to find a way to end the cycle. The screenplay started as an allegory of overwork and fear of intimacy, but over the course of time and, especially as I have gotten closer to showcase, it became more specifically about what Sam sacrifices to get out of the time loop, or in other words, what she sacrifices to succeed. Fame is seductive and I fear the part of myself that wants it. In writing the final draft of the script I leaned into the part of me that I don’t love to look at, the part that will do anything for the job. Playing Sam was very cathartic, I look forward to seeing the final product. I hope it communicates that at the end of the day, happiness is not found through the admiration of strangers.
